China takes aim at Trump

China's Finance Minister Lou Jiwei
China accused the United States Republican Party of “groundless accusations” in a statement to Chinese media, after the RNC platform dismissed Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea and recognized Chinese suppression of Tibetan culture. The Republican platform portrays China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea as “preposterous,” and called its brutal tactics in Tibet “cultural genocide.” The platform also calls on the U.S. to continue selling arms to independently ruled, democratic Taiwan.

China’s foreign ministry issued a statement to China’s official news agency, Xinhua, saying “we hope relevant parties stop their groundless accusations against China and interference in China’s domestic affairs"

In April Chinese Foreign Minister Lou Jiwei called Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump an “irrational type.”

Trump has made the U.S. trade deficit with China a central element of his economic policy, and has promised massive tariffs on Chinese goods.
